Practical steps that actually work

After 20 years in HR, Sandra knows what works — and what wastes your time. These are the tips she shares with everyone she works with.

Tip 01
Your CV should be 2 pages. No more.
Hiring managers won't read a 5-page CV — they'll just move on. Cut everything before 2006. Lead with a 3-line summary that says who you are and what you deliver. Use bullet points for achievements, not duties. And always tailor the top half to the specific job you're applying for.
Tip 02
Apply for fewer jobs, better.
Sending 30 generic applications a week is exhausting and rarely works. Instead, identify 5 roles that genuinely fit your experience, research each company properly, and write a tailored cover letter. A focused application to 5 well-matched roles beats 30 spray-and-pray applications every time.
Tip 03
LinkedIn is not optional anymore.
70% of jobs are filled through connections — and recruiters search LinkedIn every single day. If your profile is out of date or incomplete, you're invisible to them. Add a professional photo, write a headline that explains what you do (not just your job title), and post one short comment or observation about your industry once a week.
Tip 04
Don't apologise for your age — use it.
Experience, reliability, calm under pressure, mentoring ability — these are exactly what many employers are looking for and struggling to find. Instead of hiding your seniority, lead with it. "I've managed teams through restructures, budget cuts, and high-growth periods" is a selling point, not a liability.
Tip 05
Prepare three stories, not thirty answers.
Most interview questions can be answered with a small set of well-prepared stories from your career. Choose three experiences that show different strengths — leadership, problem-solving, resilience — and practice telling them clearly in 2 minutes each. You'll find they fit almost every question an interviewer throws at you.

20 Years Behind the Hiring Table

I spent two decades as a senior HR professional — Head of Talent at a logistics company with 3,000 staff, and later HR Director at a financial services firm. In that time, I reviewed over 15,000 CVs, conducted more than 2,000 interviews, and managed redundancy programmes that affected hundreds of people.

When I left corporate HR, I wanted to do something that felt more directly useful. I'd always found the most rewarding part of my job was helping people navigate difficult transitions — especially those who were over 40 and suddenly facing a job market that felt unfamiliar and a bit daunting.

So that's what I do now. No coaching packages to sell, no online courses. Just honest, practical advice — and a free guide that gives you the same information I'd give a close friend.
